Healthwatch's response to the CQC State of Care Report

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today published its annual analysis of the quality of health and adult social care in England for 2016/17.

The State of Care report looks at the trends, highlights examples of good and outstanding care, and identifies factors that maintain high-quality care.

Responding to the report, Imelda Redmond, National Director of Healthwatch England, said:

“We know from our conversations with the public that people recognise the challenges that health and social care services are currently facing. 

“Today’s report offers some reassurance that social care, GPs and hospitals as a whole are coping under immense pressures. However, we must not overlook that the CQC’s report also indicates that people are increasingly struggling to access care. In particular, more people are waiting longer in A&E, more planned operations are being cancelled and people are waiting longer for treatment. 

“Importantly, the CQC’s report emphasises that people get the best outcomes when patients, carers and professionals are involved in decision-making. It is vital that the NHS and social care service listen to this.  

“Healthwatch England and the rest of our network of 152 local Healthwatch are helping services work with people to make this happen.”
