I'm still me

A look at how care homes in Dorset support people to live active, independent lives.

We conducted research into care homes and what meaningful activities are in place for residents to keep them mentally and physically stimulated, to enhance their quality of life and retain their sense of self.

We randomly selected eight care homes (spread across the county) and undertook unannounced Enter & View visits over a period of two months. Afterwards, we asked the homes for feedback on our approach and carried out a review with our Enter & View Authorised Representatives. Following this, we amended and adapted the methodology, considering all the feedback received.

Some key findings of the report include:

  • Not all homes had a 'whole home' approach to who is responsible for activity planning and provision.
  • Some larger homes had dedicated activity teams.
  • Larger homes had easier access to transport (especially those part of larger groups).
  • Smaller homes knew their residents better.

This report was produced by the previous Healthwatch Dorset service provider, Healthwatch Dorset CIC.
