How young people access health information in Dorset
Young people are increasingly turning to TikTok, social media and AI tools for health information, according to a new Healthwatch Dorset report co-produced with youth volunteers. The project explored where young people seek health advice, how confident they feel navigating NHS services and the barriers they face when trying to access support.
Based on a survey of 55 people aged 16 to 30 across Dorset, the report found that digital platforms play a central role in how young people access health and wellbeing information. While many respondents were confident finding information online, relatively few said they routinely check whether information comes from trusted sources such as the NHS.
Key findings
- Most young people access health information online.
- TikTok and AI are among the most popular sources.
- Few routinely check whether information comes from trusted sources.
- Confidence in using NHS services is lower than awareness of them.
- Mental health support remains a significant concern.
- Many young people with long-term conditions feel their needs are not being well managed.
Recommendations
- Increase NHS-verified content on the platforms young people use.
- Improve health literacy through education and critical thinking skills.
- Raise awareness of NHS services and how to use them.
- Reduce barriers to seeking support, particularly for mental health.
- Better care planning for young people with long-term conditions.
